Jason and I explore MOMA!

I was lucky enough to find myself in New York in February of 2005, and decided to hook up with my buddy Jason to explore the recently renovated MOMA in New York. The Museum of Modern Art is indeed awesome, here's some photos!

Jay and I hook up before our adventure at a local coffee shop in New York. As a coffee lover, I found New York's level of coffee penetration FANTASTIC. There's a place to grab a Joe on literally every corner.

Well, we're here, so let's get a photo of us downtown before entering the museum!

Our first stop is the sculpture garden outside. If you water the sculptures, do they grow?
No? Then why the hell is it called a garden?

Look at this thing! It's like a polished alien rhino from dimension X.

Man, this sculpture has had a tough day at the office. He's gonna lie down for a bit and relax.

I guess this artist was in a hurry - he laid out all the materials for his work, but then probably had a phone call or something and had to leave before he had a chance to assemble it. I hope he gets a chance to finish putting it together!

Nobody, but NOBODY, is breaking into this chest of drawers. It's been filled with cement.

I'm a Chess fan, so I found this one interesting. There's four shades on the board, and all the pieces are knights. It would be great to get three buddies, enjoy a few cocktails, and see if we can figure out how to play this.

This one really caught my eye - it's a glass cabinet filled with THOUSANDS of little ceramic "vessels". Pots, jugs, pans, bottles, kettles, you name it. All hand made! This artist obviously is a big fan of fluids.

MAN this thing must have taken FOREVER! I wonder if the dude got halfway and was like, "What the hell was I thinking??? That other guy just dropped a bunch of wood and metal in the God damned lobby and he's done! He's already working on his next exhibit! I've been at this stupid thing for MONTHS!" Do you think? Or was he just like "man, I love making these pots, I just can't stop!" and his friends were like "Dude, seriously, STOP MAKING VESSELS, really, we think you've made enough". We'll never know.

Check out this cool-ass chair. Flowers locked inside clear plastic - totally cool. It's hard to see the back of the chair, because it's so clear. That's nice plastic, man. Spared no expense.

How GREAT is this CHAIR!!! The RopeSeat!

At first glance this chandelier thing looks like some nifty science fiction design, but look closer - it's a load of plates, mugs, and cutlery, EXPLODING! Awesome! It's KITCHEN meets AIR BURST!

Art is EVERYWHERE! The museum features a collection of stuff that's artistic, but everyday. What a neat idea.

Apple products in the MOMA? How cool is that? Steve Jobs is the best! Long live Apple!

Post it notes? Art? Sure, why not!

I did the pensive Europe backpacker thing years ago when I was younger (and skinnier)... I remember these departure boards, and how they made the best sounds. You'd be in a massive train station and they would start flipping, making this wicked CLACK-CLACK-CLACK noise. Then more boards would change, and soon the entire station would be in a whirling, clicking, zipping frenzy! With the advent of LCD and Plasma screens, boards like this will eventually totally disappear, so I'm glad that there's one alive still. This board randomly fires up and flips around, too, so you can experience the CLACK-CLACK-CLACK sound for yourself!

Even the museum itself is a work of art. It's totally cool.

Here's "Water Lilies" by Monet, just sitting there, in the lobby. So cool.

That's an Ikea inflatable couch on the left there - remember those? And how awesome is this chair? I bet Buck Rogers has one of these chairs in his den, and relaxes in it after a hard day of battling Draconians.

I mean, sitting there, on the wall, is Van Gogh's Starry Night. No protective cover, no glass screen, nothing at all. How crazy is that? You could literally walk up and stick your finger right through it (but you'd probably be quickly imprisoned if you did). How much money has Ikea made off copies of this print I wonder?

We begin and end with sculpture! What a great visit. I highly recommend a visit to MOMA!

Jay and I were a little parched after our trip to the library, so we decided to hit Grand Central Station (which has two bars right inside it) to enjoy a refreshing cocktail. The bartender there made for us THE BEST "Old Fashioned" that I've EVER had - the PERFECT ending to a wonderful day! Here's a little video of Jay and I enjoying our drinks, just press play.

And here's how to enjoy an Old Fashioned for yourself.
The key is good bourbon, like Knob Creek, or Makers Mark.

Cheers!
